The Story of Books of the Raksura

Released between 2012 and 2017, The Books of the Raksura takes place in the Three Worlds, populated with hundreds of humanoid species. A shape-shifter convinced there is only one of his kind, Moon has spent his life hiding what he is in order to try to fit in. Everything changes when he finally meets another shape-shifter like him, opening a new world of adventures and challenges.

Does the Books of the Raksura series need to be read in order?

We always advise reading the books following the publication order. In that case, it means first reading the main trilogy, then following with the short stories collection, despite the fact that some of them take place in chronological order.

It is also better to read the short stories before books four and five, as all of them take place before, and there are some minor references in the books.

Who is Martha Wells?

Martha Wells is a Texas-born writer of science-fiction and fantasy fiction. Born on September 1, 1964, in Forth Worth, TX, Martha Wells wrote Star Wars and Godzilla fanfics when she was a teen. She received a B.A. in Anthropology, but took also science fiction and fantasy class during this time and wrote one of her first fantasy stories.

Martha Wells attended several writing workshops and conventions as an inspiring writer. If she failed to sell any of her short stories, her first novel, The Element of Fire, find a publisher quickly and was released in 1993. The book was nominated for several awards, but it was with The Murderbot Diaries series, almost 25 years later, that Martha Wells won her first awards. Thanks to this now-famous murderbot, she has four Hugo Awards, two Nebula Awards and three Locus Awards.

Before the publication of The Murderbot Diaries, Martha Wells had some ups and downs, and even had a two-year-long period where she failed to sell any books–a situation that came to an end when her book The Cloud Roads was picked up by Night Shade.

It’s now been almost thirty years since Martha Wells write action-adventure stories, and her books have been translated into twelve languages.

What has Martha Wells written beyond the Books of Raskura series?

There is no doubt about it, Martha Wells is most known for The Murderbot Diaries, a science-fiction series about a violent, self-hacking robot searching for the meaning of life. She also wrote the fantasy series Ile-Rien.
