9 Cozy Mystery Series with Cats, for some Fun and Purr-Fect Sleuthing

Authors enjoy the company of four-legged friends. Agatha Christie owned two Manchester Terriers during her lifetime while Ernest Hemingway had many many cats (apparently, the author once owned over 50 cats while living at his house, the Finca Vigia in Cuba). Mark Twain was also known to adore his cat, Bambino and Virginia Woolf loved cocker spaniels, with her dog Pinka often by her side.

Many writers love pets – and some are not furry or have four legs. And readers, too, love pets. It seems natural then that our life companions invite themselves into books and help their owner/caretaker in their day-to-day lives. Sometimes, it can mean that our furry friend has to solve crimes!

The Cat Who series by Lillian Jackson Braun (also known as the Jim Qwilleran Mysteries)

No list of cozy mystery books would be complete without Lillian Jackson Braun, known as the First Lady of Cat Mysteries. A series of more than 30 mystery novels, The Cat Who… follows Jim Qwilleran, a journalist, and his beloved Siamese cats, Kao K’o-Kung (Koko for short) and Yum Yum who help him solve mysteries.

Magical Cats Mystery Series by Sofie Kelly

Books, libraries, and cats with a hint of magic! This is the writer Sofie Kelly’s (also known as Sofie Ryan & Darlene Ryan) trade secret formula for her Magical Cat Series. The story focuses on Bostonian Kathleen Paulson, a librarian who recently relocated to Mayville Heights, Minnesota. She was unaware of the significance of the two new cats in her life when they first entered it. The Black Cat Bookshop Mystery Series by Ali Brandon

Coming from Ali Brandon (who also writes under the names Anna Gerard and Diane A.S. Mrs Murphy series by Rita Mae Brown

Rita Mae Brown and her feline co-author Sneaky Pie Brown are behind this cozy mystery series featuring postmistress Mary Minor “Harry” Haristeen, crime-solving cats Mrs. Murphy and Pewter, and Tee Tucker the Welsh corgi. This unique team of Southern sleuths has been solving crime in Albemarle County, Virginia since 1990 and in more than 30 books already.

Second Chance Cat Mystery Series by Sofie Ryan

If you like the Magical Cats Mystery Series by Sofie Kelly, chances are you will also like the Second Chance Cat Mystery Series by Sofie Ryan – as Sofie Ryan and Sofie Kelly are the same person!
