About the author of The Promised Neverland

Kaiu Shirai is the pseudonym for the Japanese manga writer famous for The Promised Neverland. His real name is unknown.

Kaiu Shirai was an actor in traditional Japanese theatre, specifically Kabuki, at a young age, and was greatly influenced by this experience. After graduating from university, Kaiu Shirai worked as a company employee, but resigned with the aim of becoming a professional manga artist and began submitting manuscripts to magazines. His first one shot called The Location of Ashley-Gate was published on June 2015 in the digital magazine Shōnen Jump+.

Not long after, Shirai began the publication of the manga series The Promised Neverland, based on drafts written when he was still an amateur, with Posuka Demizu as illustrator. He originally planned to draw the manga, but his editor felt like Shirai’s style ‘didn’t do the script justice’ and that it would be too hard for Shirai to keep up the quality of both. Demizu then joined the project and the manga was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump between 2016 and 2020.

With Posuka Demizu, Kaiu Shirai also created Miroirs, a collection of three stories inspired by the life and philosophy of Coco Chanel.
